Sam Dooley reports:
Ellie Dooley and new recruit Rebekah Hayne were both missing from the Peco Cross Country as they were putting in a 100m swim and a 1km track run in the Yorkshire heats of the British Schools Modern Pentathon.
The morning swim saw Ellie clock 1:31, and Rebekah 1:42 in their heats to leave them in 9th and 10th places overall.
But it was better on the run ....certainly for Ellie. A quick start from the gun had Ellie tracking the race leader for the first 400m, and as she tried to raise the pace, Ellie stayed on her shoulder as the field spread out. At 750m Wetherby runner Poppy Moore (a parkrun regular) moved up from third into the lead, but could not shake off the young Hyde Park Harrier. As the pace picked up over the last 150m, Ellie put in the kick she is becoming increasingly noted for, and raced away from the field to take first place in 3:31.
For Rebekah, who only started running in March this year, it was her first track race, and her 4:56 was the first time (any surface) that she has broken 5 minutes for 1km.
So a hard earned Gold Medal for Ellie and a full set of PBs for both girls. Can't say they both didn't give their best.
Absolutely brilliant results girls! Well done!
