Information is now available for the new format for the HPH Club Championship competition 2011 / 2012 which included the races that will feature in the competition.
A big thank you to Sam Dooley who volunteered to developed the competition following the AGM in November. Sam has offered to explain the scoring system at the next AGM which will be held in April or May.

Information from Sam:
Introduction
The club championship presents an opportunity where the ideals of athletics can be pursued alongside the ethos that Hyde Park Harriers holds.
The word “Athletics” is derived from the Greek word “athlos” meaning contest. And it is right that an athletic club should hold a contest to determine its own champion.
The club championship therefore seeks to establish, on an annual basis, who in the club should be crowned as Club Champions – one male, one female, and do so in a way that meets one of the aims of the stated club ethos:
- To encourage participation irrespective of ability in competitive opportunities and support local races.
Annual Format
The format of the Club Championship seeks to achieve, through its structure, to encourage members to get involved in local races and to compete to the best of their ability. It will recognise the achievements of individuals at all levels. This is in keeping with the Club Ethos.
The Club Championship will take place annually during the twelve months commencing 1 April and concluding 31 March. This is in line with the UK Athletics calendar.
There will effectively be two Club Championships, one for female club members, and one for male club members. An individual must have paid their Club subscriptions for the year in full prior to partaking in the Club Championship.
The Club Championship will consist of 10 designated races. These will be the same 10 races for men as well as women.
The races will be spread across a range of distances no less than 5km, and no more than 13 miles.
The races will not be exclusively road races, but will be made up of a mix of terrain.
In determining the races for the championship, account will be taken of locality and cost, in order that support is given to local races and that Club athletes are not deterred from participation due to cost. This contributes to the Club’s ethos to “...support local races...” and “...provide services that are fair to everyone...”.
The calendar of races will be announced prior to 1 April and at least 28 days prior to the date of the first race. The calendar will be subject to confirmation that named events will be going ahead as presumed. In the event that a race does not take place a suitable alternative race will be named. In selecting the calendar of races, cost and support of local events will be considered.
Performance criteria in the relevant races will not be exclusively based on finishing time, but may include other measures such as age graded performance, and handicapped times. This contributes towards the club ethos to “...encourage participation irrespective of ability in competitive opportunities...”
Points relating to relevant performance for each event will be awarded.
The best seven performances for each individual will be totalled, with the Champions being the persons in each competition with the highest points. In the event of a tie, a head to head record across all 10 events will be used to determine the champion. If the result is still tied, then the most bonus points accumulated (across ten events) will be used to determine the Champion. If a Champion can still not be determined, a draw will be declared.

Performance
Time
First runner (in each gender) to finish will receive 20 points, this will then decrease by one point for subsequent finishers. Where twenty plus runners compete in any one gender, then one point will be awarded for twentieth and each subsequent placing.
Age Grade
An age grade performance will be calculated for all finishers based on Age Grade performances calculated and published on the Running for Fitness website (© Owen Barder). The finishers will then be ranked by age graded performance. Based on the age grading, the first runner (in each gender) to finish will receive 20 points. This will then decrease by one point for subsequent finishers. Where twenty plus runners compete in any one gender, then one point will be awarded for twentieth and each subsequent placing
Handicap
The handicapper will calculate a handicap time for all club runners based on performances at Leeds parkrun between 1 April and 31 August. This will remain sealed until the morning of the run. Following the publication of the results, the handicap time will be added to the recorded time to produce an adjusted time. The finishers will then be ranked by the adjusted times. Based on the adjusted times the first runner (in each gender) to finish will receive 20 points. This will then decrease by one point for subsequent finishers. Where twenty plus runners compete in any one gender, then one point will be awarded for twentieth and each subsequent placing.
Bonus points
3 bonus points will be awarded to any runner who wins their age category, 2 bonus points will be awarded to any runner finishing second in their age category, and 1 bonus point will be awarded to any runner finishing third in their age category.
A further bonus point will be awarded to any runner finishing in the top 10% of their age category where 10 or more runners have competed.
Locality and Cost.
Locality: All ten events take place in West Yorkshire,. The closest event is approximately one mile from The Edge, the furthest is less than 20 miles. More than half the events take place within Leeds City Boundary.
Cost. The cost of the ten events ranges from £15.50 to free. Based on last year’s prices, the cost, to an athlete competing in all ten events would be £77.50: an average of £7.75 per race. However the cost of competing in seven events could be as low as £37 (£5.29 per race).
Awards
An Annual trophy will be awarded to the respective Club Champions in recognition of their achievement. This will be awarded after the final event, at a time determined by the Hyde Park Harriers Club Committee.
