18 Hyde Park Harriers turned out for this mid week
event (second club championship race). Well done everyone for completing a
really varied course. Thanks for the support from Jaz and Sarah Farnell.
This was the seventh running of the ABC courtesy of
Horsforth Harriers.
A big thankyou for a really well organized race event.
A big thank you to Andrew Thrippleton who took some
excellent photos at the race and can be viewed at: http://picasaweb.google.com/ANDREWTHRIP/ABC#
Above is a montage of HPHers Andrew took.
The next Club Championship race (3/10) takes place at
Bradford parkrun on Saturday 18th June.
Ken Fox has written the following report
There was a great turnout by Hyde Park Harriers at the Apperley
Bridge Canter (ABC) last Thursday evening. A total of eighteen Harriers ran the
10K multi-terrain course - a turnout only bettered by Valley Striders who had
just one more. Being the second race in this year's Club Championship will have
boosted the numbers and three of us (me, Richard Quinn and Shane Ewen) are
extremely grateful to Jaz who drove us there and back from Headingley and
cheered us on during the race despite being too unwell to run herself.
It was my first time at the ABC so I wasn't too sure what to
expect. I had been told there would be a hill after the start, but that it
would then go down to the canal and finish on the flat. I was hoping that the
hill wouldn't be as gruelling as the hill at the end of last month's Guiseley
Gallop although if I'm going to run up a hill I'd much rather it was at the
beginning than the end. Whoever came up with the Guiseley Gallop course is a
sadist!
After assembling outside Woodhouse Grove School the 434 runners
were walked to the starting position in Woodlands Drive. The walk took us past
The Queens pub and I was almost tempted to forget the race and nip in for a
pint and a bite instead! At 7:30pm prompt we were off - heading down a pleasant
country lane avoiding the couple of cars that had ventured out without
realising there was a race on. Dave McGuire, Shane Ewan, Chris Jones and
Richard Quinn soon disappeared into the distance in front of me as I decided to
take it easy because of that hill (and they're all much quicker than me as
well). The road turned into a track through woods and started a gentle climb. I
reached the top and started the descent. Surely that wasn't the hill I thought.
That wasn't very taxing. There must be another one coming up. But after
hurtling downhill avoiding potholes that could have eaten a small tractor I
arrived alongside the canal. So that was the hill. I could have pushed a bit
harder. Ah well, I'll know how to do it better next year. Reached the halfway
point, now back along the canal. A bit of a headwind and the track a bit
uneven. Managed to keep a half decent pace going and was only passed by a
handful of runners and a couple of flying ducks. Spotted Leroy Sutton in front
of me and had a bit of a race with him. He's in the same age group as me and
we're often close at Leeds parkrun. Picked up the pace and went past him. He
was determined I wouldn't beat him and he came back at me. He nipped in front.
Tagged along behind him. He began to slow. I went past him again.
Out onto the
road and back towards the school. Just a lap round the playing fields before
the finish. Just about to enter the narrow track round the field and Leroy nips
back in front! No way of passing him now until we turn into the finishing
straight. No worries, I'll just stick behind him and then outsprint him. No
trouble. So round the final corner and kick. Bugger. Why's Leroy disappearing
into the distance. He looked dead a minute ago. Kick again. I'm really flying
now. Slowly closing the gap, but too slow. Finish line arrives and he's still a
pace in front of me. I need some better racing tactics! Now to find out what
the Quality Memento for All Finishers is. It turned out to be a very nice pair
of "1000 mile" running socks - with a blister free guarantee. A very
nice memento and much more useful than another t-shirt. Time to check on the
other Harriers in front of me and cheer home the ones behind me. All did well
from Dave McGuire in 16th place in 38:21 to Les Bradshaw who avoided the wooden
spoon in 433rd place in 1:12:23. A great finish on shot legs by Liz Jones saw
her come home in 423rd in 1:09:14. Then over the road to the Stansfield Arms
for a pint of real ale, some free chips courtesy of Jaz and to swap tales and
discuss all sorts of esoteric things. A perfect running evening with a perfect
running club.
