My first experience of running was taking part in some of the first ever Race for Life 5k events, but I never ran any further than this. Then along came my children and I didn't run again until 2005 when I entered the Abbey Dash 10k which took me 1hr 20 mins to finish and as I crossed the line I could hardly stand never mind walk.
I turned 40 in 2006 and to celebrate decided to enter the Great North Run. At the time I couldn't run 1mile around the block without stopping, and I can still remember the feeling of triumph when I managed to run this route without stopping!
I then joined HPH which gave me the confidence to keep going and I completed my first Great North Run in about 2hrs 22!
Since then, thanks to HPH, I have kept running and racing. In 2007 I completed 99 miles of races (including Dublin Marathon). In 2008 I took part in at least one race each month. My favourite moment was completing the Abbey Dash in under an hour - taking 20+ minutes of my first ever dash!
I enjoy racing and find having goals keeps me going so for 2009 I'm chasing a Marathon, half marathon and 10k PB. And my ultimate goal.................to take part in a Marathon when I'm 90 - in a Hyde Park Harriers Vest of course!
